Bolton Library

Since 1917 when the Bible was loaned by the Heywood Family to Bolton Libraries the Bowyer Bible has occupied a number of locations: the Chief Librarian's Office; the Library Entrance Hall; the Tourist Information Office area. Over the years the Bible became of less interest to the public.

Action was taken when in August 2001 when Mr Ken Bell, former Area Librarian for Central Library arranged for a conservator to assess what was required to restore the Bible and to refres the public interest in the Bible and to pde tem

The report identified the severe wear on the bindings of the volumes and particular damage to the panels and interior of the purpose-built cabinet.

After successful funding bids to the Heritage Lottery Fund and The Pilgri m Trust, the project began in August 2003 under the direction of Samantha Collenette, Archivist, following Mr Bell's retirement.
